Client: The University of Oxford

Project: The Sheldon Medal

Brief
The University of Oxford's Central Office commissioned B&M to design and produce high-end materials for the prestigious Sheldon Medal ceremony, awarded to Sir Jim Ratcliffe. The project required a cohesive collection of elegant, impeccably crafted pieces, including personalised invitations, a bespoke brochure, matching menu cards, table names, place cards, and programmes – each reflecting the significance and sophistication of the occasion.

Solution

To achieve the desired level of refinement, we developed a series of creative concepts, producing physical mockups using premium paper stocks and demonstrating a variety of luxury finishes. This hands-on approach allowed us to collaborate with the client in selecting the most exquisite combination of materials and treatments.

For the brochure, we commissioned a bespoke illustration of the iconic Sheldonian Theatre, which was printed and debossed on the front cover, adding a subtle and tactile texture. A laser-cut window revealed a contrasting colour from the inner stock, adding depth and visual intrigue. The brochure was bound with gold staples, providing a sophisticated finishing touch.

The invitations were presented in matching envelopes, crafted from premium paper stock, and personalised for each guest. The entire suite exuded elegance, with tactile finishes and meticulous detailing that elevated the materials to the highest standard of craftsmanship.

Result

The finished collection was nothing short of exceptional. A refined and contemporary design with a luxurious, tactile quality that perfectly reflected the prestige of the Sheldon Medal ceremony. The combination of elegant debossing, intricate laser cutting, and premium finishes resulted in a suite of materials that was both visually striking and a pleasure to handle.

The client was delighted with the outcome, praising the flawless execution and the sophisticated, memorable impression the materials left on attendees.
